In our next five minutes with feature, we catch up with Richard and Clare Talbot Jones, Co-founders, and Directors at Talbot Jones Ltd.
A small, family-run business with offices in Gateshead and Llandudno, they are Insurance Brokers specialising in Third Sector, Professional and Technology Risks whose goal is to support and protect their clients as they grow and thrive.
Grab a cuppa and read on to see how they have been living the Chartered Ethos.
How long has your firm been Chartered?
Since 2018
Why is Chartered status important to your business?
Chartered status gives us a framework to guide us and benchmark our achievements as well as accountability and confidence that we are delivering the high levels of service to which we claim.
It also differentiates us from other brokers who are not Chartered, so clients who value quality, knowledge and skill can approach us assured of our standards.
What initiative has the organisation been involved in which has had a social impact/corporate social responsibility focus on?
We are keen to help startups access high quality risk management advice so they can build strong, resilient foundations.
With this in mind, we contribute to several local initiatives, such as providing Expert in Residence advice at Newcastle BIPC, providing feedback to pitches at FIRST, an enterprise support agency, and mentoring at the Millin Charity, empowering women who face intersectional challenges to develop their enterprises.
It is so exciting to see the organisations refine and develop, making their own social impact and offering huge rewards to the founders.
How do you ensure your employees remain at the forefront of their profession?
One of the key traits that all our team share is Curiosity. As well as completing basic, core training we are always keen to set challenging and engaging CPD (Continuing Professional Development) targets in line with individuals' interests and specialisms.
This is important to ensure that we continue to develop the high levels of knowledge and understanding that are increasingly important as we differentiate ourselves from AI (Artificial Intelligence) Modelling this ourselves really seems to encourage the team. Having completed a PGCert in Insurance and Risk Management, Clare recently completed an MSc in Strategic Leadership and is working on her last module for her DipCII.
Richard recently completed an MBA and was awarded FCII status. Alongside this we both gained Chartered Manager status.
We love seeing and supporting the team as they work towards their own goals with pride, interest, and commitment.
How have you implemented the CII (Chartered Insurance Institute) Code of Ethics into your business?
We have our own code of conduct that is based on the CII's Code of Ethics that underpins the work we do at Talbot Jones Ltd.
Our core values are Community, Excellence, and Integrity: serving people's best interests in any way we can, demonstrating the highest levels of curiosity to develop our skills and knowledge and doing what we believe to be right in each circumstance.
We are hugely proud that Clare won the CII Building Public Trust in Insurance award last year, which really encouraged us that we are applying the code successfully within our business.
What advice would you give a firm who is considering applying to become Chartered?
Become Chartered!
It is a great way of showing an industry-wide commitment to improving standards and building public trust. We work in an incredible industry that is based on helping people when things go wrong. That is a real privilege we can be proud of.
By working together as an industry to raise standards we can have a really important role in building the nation's confidence and resilience.
The Chartered process is a helpful framework within which to acknowledge and maintain your organisational strengths and identify and resolve areas that require development. We need to be strategic and proactive to achieve that as unified body.
