In our next instalment of Introducing our new corporate Chartered firms, we catch up with Roger Jackson, Director of Financial Planning at Financial Management Bureau who became Chartered Financial Planners in May 2026.
Find out more about what they do, what inspired them to become Chartered and how they found the process.
Could you tell us a little about your firm and the services you provide?
We have been providing independent financial planning advice to individuals and families across Cumbria and further afield for over 35 years, helping them achieve financial security and peace of mind for the future.
With offices in Kendal and Cockermouth, we are deeply rooted in the communities we serve. Whether it is guiding clients through life’s big decisions or supporting local causes close to our hearts, we are proud to make a meaningful difference, financially and beyond.
Our aim is to be the best lifestyle financial planning company in the North West!
What inspired your firm to apply for Corporate Chartered status?
Chartered is a standard to aim for and to hold. As the Royal Charter was issued by the King, it is nationally and, in some cases, internationally recognised.
We are a firm who is in a state of constant improvement and the goal of Chartered was one I set back at our conference in 2020.
At that time, we had a small number of Chartered Financial Planners, but were growing quickly, so the process of bringing on trainees through the business made it difficult to achieve the 50% minimum threshold as each year we trained one, or two, new planners, diluting the % further.
We persevered and continued, investing heavily in training both internally and with external trainers. We kept the enthusiasm as a 'learning culture', creating study groups, pathways and offering paid time off to study.
How did you find the application process?
The application process was easy, it is just a case of gathering the evidence, providing it, and engaging in dialogue where the CII team need more information.
No hassle whatsoever!
What does being a Chartered firm represent for your business?
The Chartered accreditation is an acknowledgement to each team member of the firm.
It is a well-deserved pat on the back and a badge that we can all wear and be proud of.
How did you mark this milestone?
We announced the important milestone at our summer update/party last week and celebrated with all our colleagues.
How will you communicate your Chartered status to your clients?
Our regular newsletter will include details, like this interview, telling the story and the challenge, as well as what it means to be a Chartered firm.
What advice would you give to other firms considering applying?
It is difficult, especially in a larger business or a fast-growing business. However, the challenge is worth it.
It gives the team something to aim for, it is tangible and recognised. Start now, persevere, and do not give up.
