Insurance Institute of Ireland qualifications
The following 5 examples illustrate different routes to CII qualifications and professional designations for holders of a selection of qualifications:
- Cillian has completed the Insurance Institute of Ireland Certificate in Insurance Practice
- Niamh has completed the Insurance Institute of Ireland Higher Diploma in Business in Insurance Management and Certificate in Insurance Practice
- Fiona has completed Insurance Institute of Ireland qualifications and university business degree
- Niall has completed a university business, insurance and risk management degree and Insurance Institute of Ireland qualifications
- Patrick has completed a university law degree and Insurance Institute of Ireland qualifications.
They join the CII and renew their membership annually to maintain their professional designations.
Other routes are available and the examples don't guarantee that all applications will receive the same prior learning award.
1 Certificate in Insurance Practice
Cillian is and Assistant Motor Underwriter. He has recently achieved the Accredited Product Adviser (APA) and CIP designations by completing the Insurance Institute of Ireland Certificate in Insurance Product Advice and Certificate in Insurance Practice qualifications. He is relocating to the UK and wishes to complete the CII Level 3 Certificate In Insurance.
By using the RPL eligibility checker he discovers that he could receive an exemption from (W01) Award in General Insurance for passing both core modules (CIP-01 and CIP-02) and 3 further sets of prior learning credits / unit exemptions for his elective modules.
To complete the CII Certificate in Insurance, he would require one CII insurance unit pass though direct CII assessment to reach the required 40 CII credits. He plans to pass (IF5) Motor insurance products. As a CII member, he would be eligible to use the Cert CII professional designation.

Cillian makes one application based on the Certificate in Insurance Practice.
He doesn't make a second application based on his APA or CIP designations because CII prior learning is only available for qualifications.
He also doesn't need to make a separate application based on his Certificate in Insurance Product Advice because the Certificate in Insurance Practice contains the same units.
Cillian understands that a maximum 30 CII Certificate-level prior learning credits contribute towards his target qualification - the Certificate in Insurance.
So instead of claiming the full prior learning offer, he claims the (core unit) W01 exemption and one of the WCE, WUE and I10 exemptions within his offer.
He then passes (IF5) Motor insurance products through direct CII assessment.
As a CII member, he adds the Cert CII professional designation to his email signature.
Prior learning awards for these Insurance Institute of Ireland qualifications cost 20% of the price of CII qualification units.
2 Higher Diploma in Business in Insurance Management and Certificate in Insurance Practice
Niamh is an Underwriting Manager and has recently completed the Insurance Institute of Ireland Higher Diploma in Business in Insurance Management (MDI) qualification.
She has previously completed the Insurance Institute of Ireland Certificate in Insurance Product Advice and Certificate in Insurance Practice qualifications and has the Accredited Product Adviser (APA) and CIP designations. She wishes to complete the CII Advanced Diploma in Insurance and add the ACII professional designation and CII Chartered Insurer title to her credentials.
By using the RPL eligibility checker she discovers that she could reduce duplication of study through prior learning.
She makes 2 prior learning applications:
1. Certificate in Insurance Practice
2. Higher Diploma in Business in Insurance Management (MDI).
She understands that CII doesn’t award prior learning based on the APA and CIP designations and, because her Certificate in Insurance Product Advice passes overlaps with her Certificate in Insurance Practice, there is no need to make a third application.

Niamh claims her offer in full:
- 3 CII unit exemptions and 2 sets of 10 non unit-specific credits (65 CII credits) at Certificate level
- 3 CII unit exemptions (75 CII credits) at Diploma level – including the core (M05) Insurance law and (M92) Insurance business and finance units
- 2 CII unit exemptions (60 CII credits) at Advanced Diploma level – including at least one of the core (820) Advanced claims and (960) Advanced underwriting units.
On her route to the Advanced Diploma in Insurance, Niamh will automatically complete the CII Diploma in Insurance as soon as she passes her first Advanced Diploma-level CII unit.
As a CII member, she is now eligible to use the Dip CII professional designation.
Niamh passes 2 further CII Advanced Diploma level (level 6) CII units (bringing her total to 90 CII credits) to complete the CII Advanced Diploma in Insurance.
As a CII member, she adds the ACII professional designation and CII Chartered Insurer to her email signature.
Prior learning awards for these Insurance Institute of Ireland qualifications cost 20% of the price of CII qualification units.
3) Insurance Institute of Ireland qualifications and University business degree e.g. Atlantic Technological University BA (Hons) Insurance Practice (apprenticeship)
Fiona is a Risk Manager and has completed the Insurance Institute of Ireland Higher Diploma in Business in Insurance Management (MDI), Certificate in Insurance Product Advice and Certificate in Insurance Practice qualifications and has the Accredited Product Adviser (APA) and CIP designations.
She also has a business degree which attracted an exemption from the Insurance Institute of Ireland (MDI-02) Insurance Business Environment unit. As she hasn’t passed this unit through Insurance Institute of Ireland assessment, CII doesn’t award an M92 exemption but will consider a prior learning award based on her business degree.
She too wishes to complete the CII Level 6 Advanced Diploma in Insurance and add the ACII professional designation and CII Chartered Insurer title to her credentials.
By using the RPL eligibility checker she discovers that she could reduce duplication of study through prior learning based on her qualifications.
She makes 3 prior learning applications:
1. Certificate in Insurance Practice
2. Higher Diploma in Business in Insurance Management (MDI)
3. Business degree.

Fiona has decided that she wishes to pass the CII (993) Advances in strategic risk management in insurance unit, so she claims her offer:
• 3 CII unit exemptions (45 CII credits) at Certificate level (but not the 2 sets of 10 non-unit specific credits, because these will not reduce her CII unit requirements)
• 3 CII unit exemptions (75 CII credits) at Diploma level: 2 exemptions (25 CII credits x 2) including the core CII (M05) Insurance law unit based on the MDI and 1 set of (25 CII Diploma-level non unit-specific credits) based on the degree
• 2 CII unit exemptions (60 CII credits) at Advanced Diploma level – including at least one of the core (820) Advanced claims and (960) Advanced underwriting units.
On her route to the Advanced Diploma in Insurance, Fiona will automatically complete the CII Diploma in Insurance as soon as she passes the core (530) Economics and business unit.
As a CII member, she is now eligible to use the Dip CII professional designation.
Once Fiona has passed the 3 CII Advanced Diploma level (level 6) CII units, including (993) Advances in strategic risk management in insurance, she completes the CII Advanced Diploma in Insurance.
As a CII member, she adds the ACII professional designation and CII Chartered Insurance Risk Manager to her email signature.
Prior learning awards for these Insurance Institute of Ireland qualifications and the Atlantic Technical University degree that contains the Insurance Institute of Ireland units cost 20% of the price of CII qualification units.

4) University business, insurance and risk management degree and Insurance Institute of Ireland qualifications
Niall is a Claims Manager and has completed the Insurance Institute of Ireland Higher Diploma in Business in Insurance Management (MDI), Certificate in Insurance Product Advice and Certificate in Insurance Practice qualifications and has the Accredited Product Adviser (APA) and CIP designations.
He also has a business degree which included insurance and risk management modules. For his degree, the Insurance Institute of Ireland granted him exemptions from its (MDI-01) Insurance and business law and (MDI-02) Insurance business environment units.
However, he isn’t eligible to exemptions from the equivalent CII (M05) Insurance law and (M92) Insurance business and finance units included within the CII RPL eligibility checker results. This is because the prior learning scheme requirements are different to the Insurance Institute of Ireland requirements, and he hasn’t passed MDI-01 and MDI-02 directly with the Insurance Institute of Ireland.
He wishes to complete the CII Advanced Diploma in Insurance and add the ACII professional designation and CII Chartered Insurer title to his credentials.
He makes 3 prior learning applications:
1. Certificate in Insurance Practice
2. Higher Diploma in Business in Insurance Management (MDI)
3. Business, insurance and risk management degree.

• 3 CII unit exemptions (45 CII credits) at Certificate level
• 3 CII unit exemptions (75 CII credits) at Diploma level – 1 exemption (25 CII credits) based on the MDI and 2 sets of 25 CII credits – including an exemption from (M67) Fundamentals of risk management - based on the degree
• 2 CII unit exemptions (60 CII credits) at Advanced Diploma level – including at least one of the core (820) Advanced claims and (960) Advanced underwriting units.
Niall now requires four CII unit passes to achieve the CII Advanced Diploma in Insurance.
On his route to the Advanced Diploma in Insurance, Niall will automatically complete the CII Diploma in Insurance as soon as he passes the core (M05) Insurance law mixed assessment and (530) Economics and business coursework units.
As a CII member, he is now eligible to use the Dip CII professional designation.
