Insurance Institute of India qualifications
The following 3 examples illustrate different routes to CII qualifications and professional designations based on Insurance Institute of India qualifications.
- Reena has completed the Insurance Institute of India Licentiateship qualification and wishes to complete the CII Certificate in Insurance
- Raj has completed the Insurance Institute of India Licentiateship, Associateship and Fellowship qualifications and wishes to complete the CII Diploma in Insurance
- Mandip has completed the Insurance Institute of India Licentiateship, Associateship and Fellowship qualifications and wishes to complete the CII Advanced Diploma in Insurance.
They join the CII and renew their membership annually to maintain their professional designations.
Other routes are available and the examples don't guarantee that all applications will receive the same prior learning award.
The maximum prior learning award includes sets of non unit-specific prior learning credits. These count like exemptions from elective (but not core) CII units without reducing the choice. Claiming this prior learning award reduces the number of CII qualification units required and, consequently, study time and cost.

1 Completing the CII Level 3 Certificate in Insurance
Reena is a junior underwriter and has recently completed the Insurance Institute of India Licentiateship qualification. She plans to complete the CII Level 3 Certificate in Insurance.
Reena applies for prior learning and claims her offer of 2 exemptions (30 CII Certificate-level credits):
- an exemption from (W01) Award in General Insurance, and
- an exemption from (IF2) General insurance business.
She must pass at least one unit through direct CII assessment. She doesn't plan to progress to the CII Level 4 Diploma in Insurance, so, as she works in underwriting, she passes (WUE) Insurance underwriting (non-UK). These 15 Certificate-level credits allow her to complete the CII Level 3 Certificate in Insurance.

2 Completing the CII Level 4 Diploma in Insurance
Raj has completed the Insurance Institute of India Licentiateship, Associateship and Fellowship qualifications. Raj plans to bypass the CII Level 3 Certificate in Insurance and proceed directly to the CII Level 4 Diploma in Insurance.
He doesn't need to apply based on his Licentiateship because he is eligible to the maximum 30 Certificate-level credits as exemptions based on his Associateship and/or Fellowship qualifications.
Raj makes 2 prior learning applications:
- one based on his III Associateship qualification
- one based on his III Fellowship qualification.
He claims two Certificate level exemptions (15 credits each) and two sets of 25 Diploma-level non-unit specific credits (total 80 credits).
He passes both Diploma-level core units (M05) Insurance law (25 credits) and (M92) Insurance business and finance (25 credits) and therefore completes the qualification. As a CII member, he is eligible to use the Dip CII professional designation.

3 Completing the CII Level 6 Advanced Diploma in Insurance
Mandip, a broker, has recently completed the Insurance Institute of India Licentiateship, Associateship and Fellowship qualifications.
Madip makes 3 prior learning applications - one for each III qualification - and needs to claim only three Certificate level exemptions (15 credits each) and two sets of 25 Diploma-level non-unit specific credits (total 95 credits).
As this includes an exemption from W01, which is the core unit for the CII Level 3 Certificate in Insurance, Mandip will complete the Certificate in Insurance after passing the first CII unit through direct assessment.
Mandip passes both Diploma-level core units (M05) Insurance law (25 credits) and (M92) Insurance business and finance (25 credits) and completes the Level 4 Diploma in Insurance qualification. As a CII member, Mandip is eligible to use the Dip CII professional designation.
Mandip now needs to pass five more CII units (150 credits) to achieve the Level 6 Advanced Diploma in Insurance and upgrade the Dip CII designation to ACII. These units include the core (930) Advanced insurance broking unit.

Chartered Insurer title
On completion of five years of sector experience, Mandip applies for the prestigious Chartered Insurance Broker title, which adds to the ACII professional designation.
Prior learning awards for Affiliated Institutes' qualifications cost 20% of the price of CII qualification units.
