Achieving CII qualifications through direct assessment - including Certificate in London Market Insurance
Where your non-CII qualifications don't sufficiently match CII qualifications for a prior learning award, you will need to complete CII qualifications wholly through direct assessment.
The examples below illustrate typical routes to CII qualifications and member designations. Other routes are available.
Level 3 Certificate in London Market Insurance
Selma has just started her first role as a liability underwriter in the London Market. She wants to complete the Level 3 Certificate in London Market Insurance before progressing to the Level 6 Advanced Diploma in Insurance as her career develops.
She joins the CII and renews her membership annually to maintain her professional designations.
She selects three core (Certificate-level) units:
- LM1 London Market insurance essentials
- LM2 London Market insurance principles and practice
- LM3 London Market underwriting principles.

After passing LM1 and LM2, she completes the CII Level 3 Award in London Market Insurance.
Passing LM3 upgrades this to the Level 3 Certificate in London Market Insurance. As a CII member, she is now eligible to use the Cert CII (London Market) professional designation.

Progressing to Level 4 Diploma in Insurance
The following year, as Selma is dealing with more technical issues, she decides to complete the Level 4 Diploma in Insurance. 30 of her Certificate-level credits (two units) will automatically contribute towards the Diploma in Insurance. She passes:
- M05 Insurance law (core unit)
- M92 Insurance business and finance (core unit)
- M96 Liability insurances
- M80 Underwriting practice.
These 95 Diploma-level credits bring her CII credits to 140.

She upgrades her professional designation to Dip CII.

Achieving the Level 6 Advanced Diploma in Insurance
Selma passes the CII (960) Advanced underwriting unit plus a further four Advanced Diploma-level units to achieve the Level 6 Advanced Diploma in Insurance, which is an equivalent level to a degree. These 150 Advanced Diploma-level credits bring her CII credits to 290.

She upgrades her professional designation to ACII.
After completing five years of sector experience, Selma is eligible to apply for the Chartered Insurer title.
