1 Business degree - 55 CII prior learning credits

Abimbola recently graduated from a UK university with a BSc (Hons) in business and started a role as a junior underwriter. She plans to complete the CII Level 4 Diploma in Insurance and Level 6 Advanced Diploma in Insurance qualifications.

Aware that prior learning awards can and do change over time, Abimbola applies promptly and claims her prior learning offer of:

• one set of 25 Diploma-level non unit-specific credits, and
• one set of 30 Advanced Diploma-level non unit-specific credits.

 

Level 4 Diploma in Insurance

Abimbola decides to work towards the Diploma in Insurance without completing the Level 3 Certificate in Insurance. She passes (M80) Underwriting practice (20 Diploma-level credits), then requires both the core law and business units. Once she passes these and completes the qualification, as a CII member, she is eligible to use the Dip CII professional designation.

 

Level 6 Advanced Diploma in Insurance

Abimbola needs to pass six more units to achieve the Level 6 Advanced Diploma in Insurance. Her route includes the core (960) Advanced underwriting unit.

She passes three more Advanced Diploma-level units, achieving the minimum 150 credits at Advanced Diploma level, and two more Diploma-level units to reach the 290 credits. She upgrades her Dip CII designation to ACII.

 

Chartered Insurer title

Once she completes five years of sector experience, she applies for the prestigious Chartered Insurer title to accompany her ACII designation.

2 Business degrees - 60 (maximum) CII prior learning credits

Mark graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics and an MBA and is currently working as a junior reinsurance broker.

The Exemptions Search on the CII website states that for his bachelor's degree he could receive a set of 25 Diploma-level non unit-specific credits and an exemption from (530) Economics and business (30 Advanced Diploma-level credits). For his MBA, the maximum prior learning award is two sets of 30 Advanced Diploma-level non unit-specific credits.

However, the prior learning scheme rules tell Mark the maximum eligibility for both degrees is 60 (two sets of 30) prior learning credits. Mark makes his prior learning applications (one application per degree) on the same date to enable CII to determine the optimum permutation across both degrees:

• An exemption from (530) Economics and business (30 Advanced Diploma-level credits), and
• One set of 30 Advanced Diploma-level non unit-specific credits.

Mark claims the offer in full. This now appears on his CII learning statement.

 

Level 3 Certificate in Insurance

Mark decides to pass (IF1) Insurance, legal and regulatory on his route to Diploma, achieving the Level 3 Certificate in Insurance through a combination of prior learning and direct CII assessment. As a CII member, he is now eligible to use the Cert CII designation.

 

Level 4 Diploma in Insurance

To complete the Level 4 Diploma in Insurance, Mark passes the core (M05) Insurance law and (M81) Insurance broking practice. He upgrades his Cert CII designation to Dip CII.

 

Level 6 Advanced Diploma in Insurance

Mark needs to pass six more units to achieve the Level 6 Advanced Diploma in Insurance, three of which need to be at Advanced Diploma level to achieve the minimum 150 credits at Advanced Diploma level. He chooses (M80) Underwriting practice, (M97) Reinsurance and the core (930) Advanced insurance broking within these six units.

He upgrades his Dip CII designation to ACII.

 

Chartered Insurance Broker title

Once Mark completes five years of sector experience, he applies for the prestigious Chartered Insurance Broker title to accompany his designation.

3 Business degree - 25-60 CII prior learning credits

Alex recently graduated from a university with a business degree that CII hasn't previously reviewed. The degree is registered within a regulatory qualification framework and appears on the UK ENIC database. This meets the criteria for CII to offer Alex a prior learning award benchmarked to similar degrees:

• one set of 25 Diploma-level non unit-specific credits.

Alex's application outcome contains an invitation to provide qualification syllabus and assessment material for the CII qualification mapping exercise. Alex provides this material within three months and CII determines that it meets the requirements to upgrade the outcome to the maximum prior learning award. For this masters degree, this is

• two sets of 30 Advanced Diploma-level non unit-specific credits.

Alex completes CII qualifications in a similar manner to Mark (above).
