Scheme rules
All qualified CII members need to complete a minimum of 35 hours’ CPD each year, of which at least 21 hours must be structured CPD. This requirement is set out in the CII’s Code of Ethics.
Your CPD responsibilities
CII Members must:
- Complete a minimum of 35 hours’ CPD each year, of which at least 21 hours must be structured CPD. In practice, the amount of CPD undertaken by members is likely to exceed this, as the actual requirement will be determined by an individual’s development needs in any 12-month period. Find out more information about structured activities here.
- Maintain an accurate record of CPD completed. Find details of the information that should be included in a CPD record here.
- Provide a copy of the CPD log if selected for CPD audit.
Who needs to complete CPD?
Qualified Chartered Insurance Institute, Personal Finance Society and Society of Mortgage Brokers members, whether based in the UK or overseas. Qualified members are those entitled to use any of the following qualification designations and titles.
Part-time roles have the same requirements as those in full-time employment. Members on a career break, e.g. maternity leave or long-term sickness, may have their CPD requirements suspended during the break.
Retired members belonging to the Retired members scheme who are no longer engaged in any insurance or financial advice business are not required to complete CPD. Partially retired members who perform consultancy or expert witness roles must comply with the scheme in full.
Members on the Continued Membership Scheme who are not currently in employment are not required to complete CPD.
CPD audit
CII Members may randomly be selected for CPD audit to confirm they have met the minimum requirements. If selected for CPD audit, members should submit their CPD record electronically, either via the CII’s CPD tool or digitally to cpdreport@cii.co.uk. They may be asked to submit evidence of the CPD activities completed. If an employer or another professional membership body maintains a CPD record, this can be submitted this if it includes all the required information. Download the CPD audit factsheet.
- Hard copy or hand-written CPD records submitted via post cannot be accepted.
- Any questions about the CPD audit can be directed to cpdreport@cii.co.uk.
- If selected for audit, evidence such as certificates of attendance does not need to be provided at the point of audit, but should be retained and produced upon request.
- If a member was not working or were unwell during the audit period, they should contact the CPD team at cpdreport@cii.co.uk to let them know and they will consider this.
