A Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) member has revealed how she is using the professional body’s material to continue to develop her team during the coronavirus outbreak.

CII member and CEO of Morning Data, Kirstin Duffield, has been providing remote CII training to company employees.

Morning Data designs and develops software solutions for the insurance and reinsurance sector and during the past 10 years, all Morning Data staff – from support staff to developers – are required to become qualified to a minimum of Cert CII level.

When UK lockdown was announced, Ms Duffield began running hour-long sessions using Microsoft Teams and digital study materials provided by the CII.

Ms Duffield said: “While the team are not currently in a position to sit their exams, the sessions have meant learning is kept fresh, and new team members are able to get up to speed with basic technical information – especially around the London Market.

“Where possible, we studied real life examples, such as recent business interruption claims, to clarify what is and what is not covered, as well as examine the use of clauses and exclusions; the rights of the consumer vs commercials clients; and the increasing role of compliance at every stage.

“I was delighted when the CII provided PDF versions of study materials. It was extremely helpful in allowing us to share the learning on screen and we can be assured that our team’s professional development can continue, even during a crisis.”

Gill White, Learning and Assessment Director of the Chartered Insurance Institute, said: “The CII takes seriously our role in supporting businesses and the clients they serve.

“We want to reduce the worries of our members and make it as easy as possible for them to continue with their professional studies whilst following government guidance to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

“We are delighted by the initiative shown by Ms Duffield to support her team during this difficult time and encourage every member to continue to work with us to continue to build public trust via advanced learning and development.”
