What will I achieve by attending the workshop? 

Participants will examine the structure of the space sector, including governmental, commercial, and scientific space activities, as well as the role of satellites in communications, navigation, earth observation, and other critical services.

The workshop will explore the principal space insurance products available to support these activities, including pre-launch, launch, in-orbit, and liability insurance covers. Participants will also gain insight into the underwriting considerations associated with space risks, including satellite design, launch vehicle selection, mission planning, orbital operations, space weather, and space debris exposures.

Finally, the workshop will provide practical understanding of the space insurance claims environment, including launch failures, in-orbit anomalies, satellite performance issues, claims investigation procedures, loss assessment methodologies, and the role of technical experts in the adjustment of space insurance claims.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the workshop delegates will:

• Develop an understanding of the global space industry and its risk landscape, including the commercial, governmental, and scientific uses of satellites, the structure of the space sector, and the role of insurance in supporting space activities and investment. 

• Learn the key space insurance products and coverage considerations, including pre-launch, launch, in-orbit, satellite liability, and related insurance solutions, together with the principal exclusions, policy conditions, and market practices that shape coverage. 

• Understand the underwriting and risk assessment process for space risks, including satellite design and manufacture, launch vehicle selection, launch and deployment operations, orbital positioning, space weather, collision risk, debris exposure, and mission-critical system reliability. 

• Gain practical insight into the space insurance claims environment, including launch failures, partial loss scenarios, in-orbit anomalies, satellite degradation, business interruption implications, loss assessment methodologies, claims adjustment processes, and the role of technical experts in investigating and quantifying losses.
