Attracting and retaining diverse talent is key to raising public trust in the profession in 2022, according to the Society of Claims Professionals.

In 2021 the Chartered Insurance Institute’s Shaping the future together consultation sought members views on ways to make the qualification framework and learning provision more user-friendly, accessible and capable of meeting the future learning needs of all insurance professionals.

When the findings of the consultation are shared this year, Sue McCall, Chair of the Society of Claims Professionals, said the membership body will work with the CII to ensure the professional body’s skills and knowledge framework further assists with ensuring the profession attracts and retains top talent.

The CII will share the findings of the consultation and how it will help shape the group’s strategy in 2022.

Ms McCall said ensuring the profession takes heed of the regulator’s focus on equality, diversity and inclusion will also be key to increasing the size of the talent pool for the claims profession.

She said: “With the FCA and Prudential Regulatory Authority having highlighted regulatory issues around equality, diversity and inclusion and stating that financial services could do better, the strategic goal and organisational imperative of all claims organisations should be to build a diverse, inclusive, technically and operationally resilient team whilst continuing to support members with their professional development”

Gill White, Chief Customer Officer of the CII, said: “While the insurance profession has made great strides forward to become more inclusive, the sector is not yet representative of the population it wishes to serve.

“The CII is committed to assisting members measure progress, identify barriers and share good practice on equality, diversity and inclusion. Initial feedback to the consultation shows each organisation has its own challenges attracting and retaining fresh talent and we are committed to assisting professionals with approaches to overcoming them.

“We will work with the Society of Claims Professionals to ensure our work with partners universities and Aspire apprenticeship scheme ensure we continue to step forward as a profession, learning from and challenging each other to open up more rewarding opportunities for more people to serve customers.”

The Chartered Insurance Institute launched the Aspire apprenticeship scheme in 2017.

More than 500 registered firms have signed up to the programme, which offers structured training to apprentices so that they can achieve the necessary qualifications and skills required to become a fully qualified financial adviser or insurance professional.

The CII also regularly speaks at university career fairs about achieving a rewarding career in the insurance profession and has establishing specialist insurance qualifications with higher education providers.
