The Society of Underwriting Professionals has revealed the profession is racing to be ready for the government’s Whiplash reforms to go live on 6 April but is facing challenges as some of the finer details have yet to be agreed.
From 6 April the insurance profession’s portal needs to be capable of processing road traffic accident claims worth up to £5,000, for use by both lawyers and people without legal representation.
But by the last week of February, the tariffs that award damages will be based on had yet to be published.
David Williams, Chair of the Society of Underwriting Professionals and managing director, underwriting and technical services at AXA UK, said he was concerned the implementation of the Whiplash reforms could be delayed due to the lack of the final details needed.
He said: “We have committed as a profession to deliver to the government’s timetable, and the amount of work in preparation has been immense.
“Until we see the final protocols, rules and tariffs however we cannot be 100 per cent ready, and therefore unless they are finalised very shortly, we could well be facing a delay in implementation.”
