How to become a fellow?
The Fellowship Programme consists of 6 steps and takes most practitioners 3-5 years to complete.
Step 1 – Enrolment and Fellowship Plan
Complete the Enrolment application form, outline your proposed plan and timeframes, indicate your choice of major achievement
Step 2 – Business Ethics Programme (BEP)
Complete the online study and assessments.
Step 3 – Major Achievement
Must be completed after achieving the CII Associateship.
Choose one from the four options:
- Additional qualification - must be UK degree-level (6)
- Above research-based discussion paper (4,000 - 5,000 words on an insurance-related subject)
- Report on a project (4,000 - 5,000 words) that brings about change in a commercial capacity
- Portfolio of published works.
Step 4 – Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Supply records of your last three years of Continuing Professional Development which adhere to the minimum of 35 hours' compulsory CPD for each year (of which at least 21 hours must be structured CPD).
Step 5 – Write a Statement of Personal Development (SPD)
This statement reflects on what you have learnt through the Fellowship Programme and outlines your justification to be awarded Fellowship of the CII.
A 1,000 word executive summary of your achievements.
Step 6 – Election application to Fellowship Assessment Board
Submit your Election application form, Major Achievement and Statement of Professional Development to the CII for a decision by the Fellowship Assessment Board.

Are you eligible?
To enrol onto the Fellowship programme you must meet all of the following requirements:
- Have completed your Advanced Diploma/Associateship*
- Be a current ACII member of the CII (and remain a member throughout your progression to Fellowship)
- Be wholly or mainly engaged or employed in work connected with insurance for at least four years.
* If you achieved ACII before 1992 you will also need to submit a summary of ten years’ relevant work experience.
