We are seeking applications for three CII Board roles from members who have either UK and/or international experience of the range of general and specialist (re) insurances needed to protect today’s business community and who have a good understanding of Financial Planning, Personal Lines, and London Markets, from (Re) Insurers, Brokers, Advisors and MGAs.

Overview of the appointment:

The CII Board is responsible for leading and developing the strategic direction of the CII as the professional body and promoting through the strategy the CII’s object to “secure and justify the confidence of the public.”  The Board must ensure that there are sufficient financial and human resources in place to enable the CII to achieve its strategic aims within a system of effective internal controls and risk management procedures.  To enable the CII to meet its objectives, the Board must set the tone of the Institute from the top and establish a culture where an understanding of public trust and ethical values persist.

Our Board Members are driven and purposeful in their delivery and execution and have clarity of thought enabling insightful contribution to discussions and decision making. Passionate and committed to actively contributing to deliver our strategic objectives through our values of excellence, visionary, and open community in a united profession.

The Engagement Board Member roles were introduced in 2019 and represent the wide and diverse membership of the Institute, acting as the Membership voice in board discussions and decisions. There are four Board Engagement Member Roles representing the financial planning sector:

  • Financial Planning
  • International
  • London Markets
  • Personal Lines

The Engagement Board members will share in having oversight of the CII business plan and strategic direction of the CII and be capable both of supporting and challenging the decision-making process.

These roles are open to all members who can demonstrate the experience and insight from a strategic perspective, gained either as a business owner/partner or having previous experience as a board member. The Engagement Board Member will be capable of working co-operatively and collaboratively at Board level to influence and drive the strategic direction of the CII, interpreting complex data and contributing to robust decision making. Members applying for the roles should be able to show recent, and active, member engagement experience, for example, attending regional events, actively participating with their local institutes or regions, and attending webinars.

Whilst all Members are eligible to apply, these appointments relate to the areas of Financial Planning, Personal Lines, and London Markets.

 

Opportunities and responsibilities that come with the role:

Engagement Board Members will act as the Membership voice in board discussions and decisions and actively contribute to the work of the Board by:

  • collaborating with fellow Board Members to develop, agree and scrutinise performance against the organisation’s strategic goals, plans and initiatives.
  • ensuring the organisation complies with all applicable laws, regulations, and corporate governance standards.
  • ensuring, alongside fellow Board Members, the Group is operating within the risk appetite and risk management framework agreed.
  • reviewing, analysing, and assessing the organisation’s financial health and performance.
  • participating in future recruitment activity to identify and appoint Committee members, senior executives and contributing to succession planning for key leadership roles.
  • ensuring the CII delivers good outcomes for its members, advocating for the CII to communicate the organisation’s strategic direction and performance.
  • exercising reasonable care, skill, and diligence always, recognising and seeking advice and support if/when required.

 

Appointment and commitment:

These are non-executive appointments with a remuneration of £8,000 per annum. Your term of office would be for a maximum of 3 years, and you would report to the Chair of the Board. In return, we expect from you a commitment to prepare for and attend 6 board meetings, each lasting approximately 5 hours, and 1 full day strategy session a year whilst supporting with other Board and Committee business between meetings as required. You would attend the CII AGM each year, undertake induction and training as required to fulfil your duties and be expected to attend an annual appraisal with the Chair.
