Undertaking research and canvassing the views of our membership are two key drivers behind good policy development. We are committed to developing our policy agenda by utilising these methods.
Innovation: Mapping the Role of the Corporate Leader
A joint research project by Cass Business School in association with the CII comes as businesses face a potential "perfect storm" of low growth and customer retenction following a deep and unexpected recession. Drawing on interviews with corporate leaders, the paper argues that innovation can be far broader than new offerings or improved processes. It sets out some cognitive tools to help leaders think through prospects within their organisation. See either the executive summary or the full report.

Investing in tomorrow's skills today: The CII prospectus for skills
Investing in tomorrow's skills today' is the CII's prosectus for skills and is our constructive contribution to the skills debate.
We have a long tradition and proven track record in providing training and development solutions and meeting the needs of our members and the industries we serve. This experience has shaped our view of the current UK skills system and enabled us to develop a seven point plan for improving skills. This plan is set out within our prospectus.
We see the simplification of the present skills landscape, the creation of a stable policy framework and the greater recognition of underutilised resources, such as professional bodies, as key to reinvigorating our skills system.

1 July 2010: Examines prospects for growth of the insurance and financial services markets in India and across South East Asia, particularly Malaysia and Singapore. Authored by Vanessa Rossi of Chatham House, the report's main prediction is that especially India and Malaysia, having already grown significantly, could surge forward in the next few decades to become dominant regional and even global financial hubs. The analysis looks at drivers that could make this “Southern Surge” of growth happen, including the role of professionalism in enhancing and sustaining these markets locally, regionally and beyond.

Insuring a better future: How to attract the best students into insurance
22 June 2010: This report presents the key findings of the CII’s recent research on students’ attitudes towards insurance as a career, and makes recommendations for how the sector can attract the next generation of talent. Over 1600 students took part in the initial surveys, which were supplemented by focus groups. Key findings confirm the image problem many have suspected, but suggest the key factor is a lack of knowledge of the sector and the breadth of opportunity that exists. One of the report’s recommendations is more structured work experience, placements and internships which are highly valued by students but currently under-utilised by major insurance employers.

Will the Consumer Financial Education Body herald a new dawn for financial capability, or just more bureaucracy? In our special report, we bring together the views of 11 stakeholders representing different sides of the financial services debate on the challenges ahead for the new body.

Election 2010: The wisdom of crowds? Hopes and fears for financial services
As part of the CII’s engagement on issues of importance to the industry and the public, we commissioned a variety of individuals from across the sector and beyond to set out their hopes and fears for financial services and insurance ahead of the general election. This is a crucial time to ensure politicians are discussing and debating the key issues facing the sector and consumers. Inevitably there will be issues like education and health which will dominate the election debate but it is vital that financial services issues are not neglected. This special report is an important contribution to ensuring that there is an open and healthy debate.

Trust research
The CII has launched a new research report on building trust in insurance and financial services. What we talk about when we talk about trust is our contribution to promoting a debate – both within and beyond our sector – which examines the key issues and helps us to develop lasting solutions. The report shows that today’s ‘crisis of trust’, which much of the commentariat has deemed unprecedented, is nothing new. Financial services has had a long-term trust deficit, and the crisis presents us with an opportunity to take action that has long been needed to bring the focus back to the consumer and the public. It sets out the CII’s views on what trust means today for financial services, and five keystones to regaining it, including a major focus on higher standards of professionalism. It calls upon the whole industry – not just those parts connected to ‘casino’ banking – to join the conversation and help develop solutions that will win the enduring trust and confidence of the public.

The CII Group has published the summary findings of our first ever Continuing Professional Development (CPD) survey. The survey, undertaken in autumn 2008, attracted responses from over 3,500 General Insurance Faculty members. The key findings will provide an important fact base to inform the CII’s review of CPD requirements going forward, with next steps to include a discussion paper outlining the key issues facing CPD today.
Our aims are to increase the relevance of CPD, help members, employers and the public to see the benefits of undertaking professional development, and increase awareness of the many existing CPD opportunities.
