Fraud & Surveillance

Fraud is a huge concern to us all, especially in the current economic situation where the number of fraudulent claims has increased significantly.

The CII’s General Insurance Faculties have set out to aid awareness and understanding of some of the ways fraudulent claims can be identified. The short videos below look at three real cases where suspicions were raised, indicating the claims may potentially be fraudulent. Through attention to detail by the claims handlers coupled with the use of surveillance to investigate the claims, vital information can be gleaned which helps ensure only genuine claims are paid.

Innovation: that Eureka moment

The CII’s General Insurance Faculties held a roundtable debate on the topic of innovation. Chaired by Lynn Richards-Cole, our roundtable produced a hugely enlightening debate as insurance leaders discussed not just the way to success, but also the potential barriers to innovation and the ways in which these barriers can be broken down.

Insurance sector views on business continuity

The Chartered Insurance Institute’s General Insurance Faculties are working with the Business Continuity Institute (BCI) to raise awareness of the importance of Business Continuity Management

In June we asked members to complete an online survey, and the results of that research are now available. The report therefore highlights some significant opportunities for the insurance sector to improve communication and understanding of the benefits of client business continuity programmes.

Spotlight on London Market

While London looks forward to the 2012 Olympic Games and the opportunities it presents, there has been a great deal of commentary about the size of the task we are facing.

This Spotlight on London Market event, in association with FINEOS, examined the risks presented by such large scale events and how insurance is a fundamental element which underpins the capability to deliver. Adrian Ballardie, Chairman of the London Market Faculty, hosted this event and he was joined by other experts in the field.

Ethics: making the right choices

The CII’s General Insurance Faculties held a roundtable debate in London in March of this year to discuss the topic of behaving ethically. Within the insurance industry, there is a firm belief that we are honourable people with high ethical standards. However, as this free-flowing and lively debate revealed, there are still plenty of questions to be asked and answered by the industry as well as plenty of opportunity for improvement.

Seizing the opportunity

Continuing professional development (CPD) has an important part to play in maintaining a strong and valued industry for the future.

As you are aware The CII has been examining the role of CPD in today’s work environment. To gain wider views the CII hosted a roundtable, inviting a wide selection of industry practitioners from all the CII faculties to give their views. This report captures the debate that took place; the main areas of discussion were-

  • CPD content and oversight;
  • Measuring activity and effectiveness;
  • The employers’ role and engagement;
  • Raising public confidence.

By joining a broad range of practitioners from various industry sectors and at varying levels, the roundtable was a great success resulting in an interesting and lively debate. Some valuable points were made, along with a number of good suggestions that will be explored further.

Raising the bar

Raising standards through qualifications and exams has long been the aim of the Chartered Insurance Institute and for many years the debate has raged as successive CII advisors have argued both for and against compulsory qualifications for the insurance industry. In the midst of the current financial crisis this debate has gained new impetus with increased government and regulatory pressures on the financial industry.

By joining older heads with some younger voices, this report helps us learn something of the expectations of our future leaders combined with the experience of those who have already made it to the top.

CII CPD Review

The CII Group has published the summary findings of our first ever Continuing Professional Development (CPD) survey. The survey, undertaken in autumn 2008, attracted responses from over 3,500 General Insurance Faculty members. The key findings will provide an important fact base to inform the CII’s review of CPD requirements going forward, with next steps to include a discussion paper outlining the key issues facing CPD today.

Our aims are to increase the relevance of CPD, help members, employers and the public to see the benefits of undertaking professional development, and increase awareness of the many existing CPD opportunities.
