The Morgan Owen essay competition

The Morgan Owen medal is the insurance world’s most prestigious essay prize. The silver gilt medal and award of up to £2,000 is offered for the best essay entered by a Fellow or Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute. The competition is run annually, with the deadline for submission 31 December and the result announced in July. Download full details of the Morgan Owen essay competition. Past winners

2005 Dr M G Collins FCII Chartered Insurance Practitioner – Michael Collins was awarded the Morgan Owen medal for 2005 together with a prize of £2,000 for his dissertation entitled ‘Teleworking at Lloyds’.

2004 Martin Briers FCII Chartered Insurer – Martin was not awarded the medal but was awarded a discretionary prize of £1,000 in connection with the Morgan Owen Medal Competition 2004 for his paper entitled: ‘The development of fire underwriting in the UK with particular reference to the period 1960-1995’.

2002 Andrew Gadsby FCII Chartered Insurer - Andrew was not awarded the medal but was awarded a discretionary prize of £500 in connection with the Morgan Owen Medal Competition 2002 for his paper entitled: ‘Essential, important or incidental’ A stakeholder analysis of perceptions towards professional insurance qualifications.

1999 Charles Lindstrom FCII Chartered Insurance Practitioner - Charles Lindstrom was awarded the Morgan Owen medal for 1999 together with a prize of £2,000 for his dissertation entitled ‘Marketing short-term Insurance in the 21st Century- A strategic perspective’.

1998 Christopher Parsons FCII Chartered Insurance Practitioner - Chris Parsons was awarded the Morgan Owen medal for 1998 together with a prize of £2,000 for his dissertation entitled 'Industrial injuries and employers liability- A search for a cure'. (London: Chartered Insurance Institute, 1999).

1997 Dr R A Litton FCII - Dr Litton was awarded the Morgan Owen medal for 1998 together with a prize of £2,000 for his dissertation entitled 'Crime prevention & the insurance industry'. (Journal of the Society of Fellows, v 13 no 1, July 1998).

1996 - Peter Gray, MSc, ACII - At the time Peter was Chairman of the Tunbridge Wells Equitable Friendly Society and a CII Vice President, he was awarded the Morgan Owen medal for 1996 together with a prize of £2,000. The award winning paper was entitled ‘Principles for the structural reform of social insurance’. The paper sets out how the Welfare State has got to its current position and how it moved away from Beveridge's original ideals. It also sets out the principles by which the State’s role should be determined and lays down four primary functions for the State.
