Prior Learning Accreditation Standards

StandardDescription
1 - Learning materials
1.1 Scope of learningThe scope of the learning should provide either an 80% match to a CII examination or the technical content should be equivalent to the appropriate CII examination level e.g. Certificate in Insurance.
1.2 Learning objectivesThe learning should include clear learning objectives and/or a syllabus in order that learners can assess their progress and identify further development areas.
1.3 Design & developmentThe responsibility for the design and development of the assessment should be assigned to an appropriate person. There should be no link between the trainer(s) and the assessment question writers.
1.4 Technical sign-off & quality assuranceThere should be a robust process for ensuring the learning materials are technically correct are kept up to date and are ‘signed-off’ by an appropriate person.
2 - Training delivery
2.1 MethodologyThe training delivery methodology should be clearly documented and appropriate for the technical level of learning.
*2.2 Learning preferencesThe learning should support learners with a range of learning preferences.
*2.3 Quality of training deliveryThe training delivery methodology employed should be of an appropriately high standard to effectively support the learners through the learning cycle. Trainer’s competence should be ensured.
*2.4 EvaluationA thorough evaluation process for the training delivery should be in place.
3 - Assessments
3.1 Assessment format70% of the assessment must be in a format of a similar standard to the CII examinations at the level of Accreditation applied for, e.g. MCQ at Certificate level.
3.2 Assessment questionsThe assessment questions must be robust and reflective of CII question writing standards and should provide candidates with a clear indication of the marks available for each question (and element thereof).
3.3 Scope of assessmentThe assessment must assess the learner’s knowledge of a broad scope of the learning covered and the syllabus.
3.4 Assessment settingThe responsibility for setting assessments should be allocated to an appropriate person, there should be a separation of the trainers from the assessment setting procedure and assessment questions should be quality assured for technical accuracy.
3.5 Assessment securityAppropriate security measures should be in place to ensure the assessment questions can not be accessed by unauthorised individuals.
3.6 Assessment conditionsAssessments should be taken under appropriate conditions, with the use of invigilators to maintain the integrity of the assessment process.
3.7 Assessment marking & moderatingThe pass mark for the assessment should be reflective of CII examination pass marks and the assessments should be marked and moderated by appropriate individuals with a formal quality assurance procedure in place. Candidate confidentiality should be maintained.
3.8 Candidate notification and appeals processCandidates should be notified of their assessment result in a timely fashion. A formal appeals process should be in place and appropriately documented.
4 - Quality assurance
4.1 DocumentationAll processes and procedures should be accurately documented and updated as required.
4.2 SponsorshipThe Accredited training programme should have the support of senior management to ensure the training is subject to ongoing development and maintenance/enhancement of standards.

n.b. Accreditation is subject to annual review. The annual review fee is c. 25% of the initial Accreditation fee, payable on an annual basis for the duration of the Accreditation.
