Recognition of prior learning

Under a scheme known as 'recognition of prior learning' you may be eligible to claim credits for relevant exams and qualifications obtained through awarding bodies other than the CII, such as professional bodies or universities. Subject to the published completion requirements these can be used towards completing CII qualifications.

RPL-RulesPlease read the scheme rules before submitting your application.

To apply for recognition of prior learning, complete and return the application form at the bottom of this page to CII Customer Service. If your application is successful, a fee of £4 per credit for CII/Personal Finance Society members and £7 per credit for non-members.
Please do not send any money at this stage. If your application is successful we will advise you the correct fee based on the number of credits and your CII membership status.

Any credits you are awarded for non-CII exams will automatically be added to your CII Learning Account, which also details the credits you have been awarded for CII exams.

The Process

Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3 Stage 4

Stage 2A Stage 2B Stage 2C
If not, the CII will request further material, e.g. qualification content, sample exams You submit all requested materials for review against RPL standards The CII confirms your award eligibility

Relevant non-CII exams and qualifications

The list of exams and qualifications that are accepted is so large and subject to such regular change that it is not possible to publish it. This is why we encourage you to submit a free, no obligation application.

There are, however, standardised credits available for UK-awarded qualifications in Accounting, Business, Economics, Finance, Law, Management, Marketing, Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial studies. Please see the downloads to the right of this page for further information. Please note these are only guides and not definitive listings.

For non-UK awarded University qualifications in Accounting, Business, Economics and Finance where the awarding organisation is on the UK NARIC database, an award of 25 non unit-specific credits at Diploma level will usually apply. If evidence is provided to the CII, either by the applicant or by the university directly, which indicates that a higher recognition of prior learning award may be merited then we will consider increasing the standard award.

The forthcoming changes to CII qualifications have important implications for students wishing to claim recognition of prior learning.
