The "Homes for Ukraine" scheme was launched by the UK government on 14 March 2022 to allow UK individuals, charities, community groups and businesses to house Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war.

Ukrainians arriving in the UK under this scheme will be granted three years leave to remain, with entitlement to work, and able to access benefits and public services. In support of this, several insurance companies have clarified wordings on their products to help support these schemes. This is in support of an agreement between the UK government and insurers that Ukrainian Nationals are accommodated as non-paying guests.

Admiral, Aviva, Direct Line, LV+ and Surewise have all stated that additional residents would normally need to be declared on a policyholder’s home insurance policy. However, those housed under the refugee scheme do not need to be included on the insurance policy and there will be no increase in premium.

Similarly, Emerald Life announced that if any of their customers take in a refugee(s), the refugee will be deemed part of the family for insurance purposes, so their belongings will be insured and no 'lodger' restrictions will apply. This means that their contents will be covered and in addition there are no lodger-type conditions in the home insurance policy.

Underwriters and insurance brokers are encouraged to review their existing home insurance products so that they can support customers who are participating in this scheme. This would also extend to the refugees hosted in case any of their belongings are also affected by theft, fire or water damage.
