Introduction

CII qualifications involve the completion of one or more units, each covering an individually assessed topic. Assessment methods vary and depend on a unit's level and subject matter.


Assessment methods include:

  • Multiple-choice exams - the assessment method for Award, Certificate, and Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning units R01-R05 assessed in the UK. Exams are delivered on-screen at a network of over 40 public centres across the UK. Sittings are available year-round, often on a weekly basis.
  • Written exams - the assessment method for some Diploma and Advanced Diploma units and all units examined outside the UK. Sittings are typically available twice-yearly in April and October at over 50 public centres throughout the UK and over 120 public centres outside the UK.
  • Coursework assessment - available for a select number of Advanced Diploma in Insurance units, Advanced Diploma in Financial Planning unit (AF6) Senior management and supervision and financial services unit (J09) Paraplanning, coursework assessment involves the completion of three written assignments during a 12 month period.
  • Mixed assessment - available for a number of Diploma in Insurance units and all Diploma in Insurance units by April 2018 (unit codes begin with the letter M). This involves the successful completion of both a coursework assignment and a multiple-choice exam. This has an 18 month enrolment period.
  • Dissertation assessment - available for the Advanced Diploma unit (991) London market insurance specialisation and being introduced in October 2016 for (994) Insurance market specialisation. This involves the submission of a dissertation proposal and an 11,000 word dissertation. This has an 18 month enrolment period. This unit should only be taken by those who have access to the necessary information and people in the London Market.

Qualification update

Testing Position

  • Examinations are based on the published syllabus. Syllabuses are available free of charge on the CII website or on request.
  • Candidates will be examined on the basis of English law and practice unless otherwise stated. It should be assumed that all individuals are domiciled and resident in the UK unless otherwise stated.
  • The CF1 examination consists of 100 multiple choice questions (MCQs). 2 hours are allowed for this examination.
  • The general rule is that the new tax year and changes arising from the Finance Act will be examined from 1 September each year. Other changes, not related to the Finance Act, will not be examined earlier than 3 months after they come into effect.
  • Candidates must keep up to date with legislative and industry changes that occur.

Tax year

  • The tax year 2015/2016 will be examined from 1 September 2015 until 31 August 2016.

2015 Budget Announcement

  • Pensions: the changes effective from 6 April 2015 will be tested from 1 September 2015,  or in the case of R08, the unit specifically on pension reforms, from 3 August 2015.

2015 Emergency Budget

The emergency budget announced a number of changes in the current tax year. These were principally:

  • New rules on pension input periods within the current tax year - this will form part of our assessments with effect from 1 September 2015. For R08, this will be tested from 3 August 2015.
  • The new Annual Investment Allowance effective from 1 January 2016 will be tested from 1 April 2016.
  • Help to Buy ISAs come into effect from 1 December 2015 and will be tested from March 2016.
  • The emergency budget also announced a number of changes proposed for tax years 2016/17 and 2017/18. Students should have anawarenessof these announced changes in so far as they inform current thinking on financial planning, but students will not be expected toapplythese rulesin detailsince they have yet to be effected and may be subject to change in the interim.  

Financial Services Compensation Scheme - deposit compensation limits

Changes to the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) deposit compensation limits come into effect on 1 January 2016.  Examinations will be reflective of these changes from 1 January 2016.

Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MIFID)

  • Where the Financial Services Authority has different rules for certain types of business, candidates should assume the non-MiFID position, i.e. a firm is authorised and transacting business in the United Kingdom, unless otherwise stated.

Intestacy Rules

As a result of the Inheritance and Trustees' Powers Act 2014, some of the rules on intestacy have changed with effect from 1 October 2014.  Examinations will be reflective of these changes from 1 January 2015.

Stamp Duty Land Tax

The thresholds and rates for Stamp Duty Land Tax have changed with effect from 4 December 2014.  Examinations will be reflective of these changes from 2 March 2015.
