Who can borrow?

Members. Any member of the Chartered Insurance Institute or Society of Financial Advisers can borrow from the library. Items are issued on loan on the understanding they are for the use of the registered borrower and will not be lent to others. We can post items anywhere in Europe. For more information on membership click here.

Subscribers. Any authorised user under a corporate subscription to CII Knowledge Services can borrow from the library. Items may be passed on to others within the firm subject to the separate terms and conditions for subscriber services. We can post items anywhere in Europe.

What can be borrowed?

Many books, pamphlets and videos can be borrowed, as well as some other material. Six books can be taken out per borrower and three videos. If something can be borrowed there will be a note in the relevant database record saying it can, eg “May be borrowed by members”. If there is no note the item cannot be borrowed.

For how long?

The loan period is two weeks for videos, four weeks for all other material. Provided the item has not been reserved by another reader, a loan may be renewed by letter or telephone or over the counter up to four times. Please quote the barcode number. Items on loan must be returned, or the loan renewed, on or before the due date. Failure to renew or return items before they become overdue could result in suspension or withdrawal of library facilities and may also incur overdue charges (see below).

Charges

Collected. Videos: £2 per item per two weeks. Short-term loans: £2 per item per working day. Other items: no charge.

Posted. £3 per parcel plus 50p per item (Videos, £2 per item). Supplement for UK first class post: £1 per item (except for videos, which are automatically sent first class). Supplement for postage outside the UK, Isle of Man, Channel Islands: £2 per item.

Overdue items. Standard loans: 20p per item for each working day overdue (waived if the item is returned within the first seven days (including weekends and holidays) overdue). Short-term loans: £2 per item per working day.

Losses

You are responsible for items on loan to you until they are returned to the library. In the event of loss you will be invoiced for the current price of the item (or the current price of a comparable item if out of print) plus handling charges of £10 per item plus £3 per invoice. However, you will not be held liable for any loss in the return post provided you have obtained a “proof of postage” certificate (free from post offices) and the parcel is properly wrapped.

Reservations

If the item you want is not on the shelves but is in stock it can usually be reserved for you. We have multiple copies of many books, so the waiting period will often be quite short. If the item you want is not in the library stock, in many cases we can buy a copy or borrow one from another library.

Request a postal loan

To request a postal loan please ring, fax or post the library with your requirements. If you are writing be sure to include your permanent identity number and a credit card authorisation or cheque.
