How to download ebooks to your desktop and tablet

Guidelines as to how to download ebooks from Discovery to be read offline. Please note: this guidance does not apply to CII study text ebooks.

You may choose to download an eBook to your computer or tablet and read it offline at a later time. This takes a little bit of setting up in the first instance, but is very easy to do so thereafter.

Setting up

1) You will need to download a suitable e-reader to your desktop or tablet in order to view downloaded ebooks online:

2) If you have not done so previously, create a personal folder. Please see the guide on how to create a folder

These two tasks only need to be done once. You will then be ready to download ebooks to your chosen device. You can download these books for up to 7 days at a time.

To download an eBook

Search or browse for the ebook you would like to download. See the search guide if you would like further information on how to do so.

From your results, click the "Download (Offline)" link for the eBook you would like to download.

Download Offlne

If you are not logged into your Discovery folder, you are prompted to do so.

Select a checkout period from the drop-down menu and click the "Checkout & Download" button.

Note: For some titles, you may see the option to select either the PDF or ePub format for an eBook.

 Pdf Or Epub

If you have been successful, you will be shown this pop-up window:

Check Out

You can either access the ebook from the link on this pop-up window, or via the checkout area of your folder, accessible from the upper-right corner of the Discovery interface.

My Checkouts

Your checkouts folder will look something like this:

Checkout Folder

Click on "Download (Offline)" - highlighted above in red. If on a desktop computer, a download will appear at the bottom of your browser:

Download Link Bottom Browser

Click on this donwload link. Adobe Digital editions will automatically open and begin downloading your ebook. You can access it for the length of the borrowing period (7 to 28 days depending on the publication days) after which time you would need to check it out again.

When accessing ebooks via tablet, downloading procedures after you have clicked on "Download (Offline)" may vary.

Please note: if the ebook is currently in use, you may place a hold on it and will be notified by email when it becomes available.
