CII Public Interest Awards 2014 winners revealed

The winners of the CII's first Public Interest Awards were revealed last night at a prestigious ceremony at LSO St Lukes in London. The Public Interest Awards have been introduced to recognise individuals, teams and organisations that have gone above and beyond to educate, inform and ultimately benefit buyers of personal and commercial insurance in the UK and the wider public.

Commenting on the awards, Dr Sandy Scott, CEO of the Chartered Insurance Institute, said; "The CII's remit has always been to assist the insurance community in securing and justifying the confidence of the public.

"These awards celebrate all those who have gone above and beyond to educate, inform and ultimately benefit consumers of personal and commercial insurance in the UK. They are also a timely reminder of how good our profession can be, and I would like to take this opportunity to applaud all the finalists. Each of the entries demonstrated excellence in their specific area and has set the standard for their fellow insurance professionals to aim for."

The winners for the awards are as follows:
 
Best campaign in the public interest - PR or Public Affairs Initiative:
Axa Insurance: Axa Roadsafe Schools Campaign
Highly Commended was LV= for the voice against fraud campaign

Best campaign in the public interest - Marketing or Advertising:
Ecclesiastical: Hands O
ff Church Roof campaign

Best campaign in the public interest for an SME audience:
Zurich Insurance's campaign around the future of SMEs and Risk

Best campaign in the public interest - Trade press:
Insurance Age: Professionalism Hub

Best customer service initiative - Insurer:
Sterling Insurance Group: Driving claims to settlement
Highly Commended was Aspen Risk Management for the Project Jackson initiative

 
Best customer service initiative - Broker:
Willis & Company: Killeaton Flooding, Northern Ireland
Highly Commended was Marsh Insurance Services for the household policy campaign

In addition to these awards, two special categories were awarded to outstanding individuals on the night. These were the Voice of the Customer Award and the Achievement Award. The Voice of the Customer Award is for an individual from outside the insurance industry, who has consistently and intelligently championed the customer. This was awarded to broadcaster and journalist Paul Lewis for his commitment to benefiting customers by educating them about insurance issues through his writing and broadcasts, particularly on BBC Radio 4's Money Box.

The Achievement Award is for an individual from inside the insurance industry who has made a significant impact by championing the issue of public interest. This award was won by Paul Evans, Group Chief Executive at Axa UK.

Commenting on the Achievement Award, Dr Scott said: "Paul is a true industry representative of the spirit of these awards. He took a stand over the need for the insurance profession to get out of the spiral it had got itself into of pursuing processes and activities that were ultimately to the detriment of the customer - most notably and specifically by deciding to stop taking referral fees.

"It is with great pleasure that we have been able to recognise and congratulate him for his work."

The host of the Public Interest Awards was Mr Jonathan Dimbleby, the well-known Radio 4 presenter and commentator on politics and current affairs. The awards were sponsored by Accenture.
