CII New Generation Group 2017 launched

Over forty future insurance leaders are beginning their training as part of the Chartered Insurance Institute's (CII) flagship talent programme: the New Generation Group. The 2017 class come from across the profession and the UK, with representatives from the likes of Aviva, Allianz, Markerstudy, Marsh, the Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB) and Zurich, among others.

The New Generation talent programme helps develop future leaders and provides participants with the opportunity to make a difference to the future of their profession across claims, underwriting, insurance broking and the London Market.

Previous groups have delivered projects that have challenged industry thinking and raised issues that impact customer outcomes from the ramifications of the Consumer Insurance Act through to the need to monitor stress claims and collaborate during surge, as well as an award-winning protocol to improve the sharing of fraud data. The most recent project output was a call for action to fill the gap in reputational risk protection for small and medium-size enterprises (SME) and this autumn research on fracking, vulnerable customers and cyber terrorism will be published.

This year's programme will include:

  • A session in Parliament hosted by Craig Tracey MP, chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Insurance & Financial Services on understanding how to influence change;

  • A 'behind-closed doors' session with the Financial Conduct Authority to help the participants understand how the regulator goes about its task;

  • A full day of being interviewed on camera to learn essential presentation skills and to help understand how the media works.

Ant Gould, Director of Faculties, at the CII, said: "I'm really looking forward to hearing what the class of 2017's views are on driving change in the profession. Along with helping them develop new contacts and networks the programme will give them a broader understanding of the insurance sector and provide them with the opportunity to learn key management and project skills - such as how to organise themselves, manage divergent interests and egos and build contacts within and outside of their own company, specialism and industry.

Sarah Rowan Dip CII, Head of Regional and National Broker Underwriting, UK Personal Lines at Zurich Insurance and alumnus of the 2016 New Generation Group added:  "It has been a great experience over the last year, providing access into key industry bodies and leaders and giving hands on experience in working through complex industry challenges.  I'd thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking to gain wider industry experience and set themselves up for the future."
