Individual accreditation
of prior learning

Under a scheme known as 'accreditation of prior learning' you may be eligible to claim credits for relevant exams and qualifications obtained through awarding bodies other than the CII, such as professional bodies, universities, etc. Subject to the published completion requirements these can be used towards completing CII qualifications.

To apply for accreditation of prior learning, complete and return the appropriate form provided at the bottom of this page to CII Customer Service. On successful validation of your application, a fee of £3 PFS/CII members and £4 non-members per credit is typically payable. Please do not send any money at this time.

Credits are also awarded in respect of relevant CII exams that you may have passed. These, together with any other credits you have claimed in respect of non-CII exams, will automatically be added to your CII Learning Account.

Relevant non-CII exams and qualifications

The list of exams and qualifications that are accepted is so large and subject to such regular change that it is not possible to publish it. This is why we encourage you to submit a free, no obligation application.

We recently standardised the credits available for UK-awarded qualifications in Accounting & Finance, Business, Economics, Law and Management. To support this change, guides in respect of financial services and insurance, covering the Diploma / Advanced Diploma in Financial Planning and Certificate / Diploma / Advanced Diploma in Insurance credits available for these qualifications, are provided at the bottom of this page. Please note these are only guides and not definitive listings.

Note: Diploma/Advanced Diploma in Financial Planning accreditation, in the form of 30 Advanced Diploma credits (and, where appropriate, an exemption from Advanced Diploma unit Financial planning process – AF5), is available where the Certified Financial Planner or ISO 22222 certification is held.

Accreditation criteria

Please find below the accreditation of prior learning criteria for your reference.

  • Prior learning accreditation can be awarded for course content which 'matches' 80% of a CII examination syllabus. Full details of CII syllabuses can be found within the qualifications area under the relevant qualification level (General Insurance or Financial Services).
  • Accreditation of prior learning is only awarded for full qualifications awarded by recognised academic institutions or other professional bodies.
  • The assessment must be of comparable standard to CII assessments with a minimum of 70% match to the CII assessment process (Modules which are purely assessed by course work will not be eligible for exemption from a CII unit)
  • The accreditation criteria must be fully met in order for any award to be made. We would therefore be grateful if you could review this carefully to ensure you provide the required information to proceed with this application.
  • Please note, accreditation is awarded at the discretion of the CII examiners committee. Awards are made based on the examination framework in place at the time of application.
